Vascular Neurosurgery

Abnormal dilatation over wall of blood vessel is called Aneurysm. In brain it can rupture to cause different types of brain haemorrhages AKA intracranial bleeds [subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), intraparenchymal hematoma, sub-dural bleed (SDH)]. Neurosurgical treatment includes occluding aneurysm neck using special titanium clips, surgery is called Aneurysm clipping.

Abnormal development of blood vessels of brain can lead to bunch of diseased blood vessels which is called Arterio-venous malformations (AVM). It can also lead to intracranial bleeds as mentioned above or cause diversion of blood flow from normal brain. Neurosurgical treatment includes occluding feeder vessel and removing the bunch of abnormal vessels called as excision of AVM.
